I had the great fortune of interviewing a fantastic independent singer-songwriter based in Vancouver, Canada. Michelle Dumond, known by her stage name Meshe, is releasing her new album SPACE for streaming on March 4, 2026. It is already available for download at Meshe.ca
1. Your newest album ★ S P A C E ★ will be released soon. What are some of your favourite elements of it?
All the art leading up to this album looked like planets. Like things floating in space, but connected through that space as something bigger. Everything was element, but the space was the binding. Some elements were tiny like a pebble or a seashell, some larger like a song and it’s entourage of charts, experiences and recordings, but the indispensable element was invisible to the eye or ear–the intention to move through a process with trust in uncertainty as possibility. That was difficult, but I enjoyed the sense of exploration, choice (in sound palette) and clearing my palette of these songs that have been malingering for a while in my back pocket.
2. Can you tell me about the inspiration for your album? What got the creative juices flowing?
Life, I gotta’ say. Uncertainty. Possibility. Wonder. Understanding, being OK with not knowing.
3. Which songs on the album have your favourite lyrics? Please tell me more.
I consider the lyrics a seamless whole–which is why I put them out as a continuous sentence. It was part of my mental training to go through the songs in my mind. This was taught to me by a piano teacher as a way to practise without an instrument.
4. Which songs on the album have your favourite musicality? Why is that?
I am feeling Who Wants Ya the most–I think Kaj, who was mixing, and I both liked this groove the most. Other people are also telling me it’s a feel-good song about being over the hill, which I thought was funny. It also does this thing where it seams between an acoustic and a digital sound in a way that I find pleasing.
5. Tell me about how you learned the piano and to sing and write songs.
Oooo do I have to? LOL. Suffering? Hiding in a piano room to avoid bullies? Being an outsider? Perseverence? An unsufferable inner voice, and inner critic? A drive for transcendance? Dance? Lots of teachers. Lots of time with an instrument and a lyric. Lots of trying to understand the voice as an emotional-physical-instrument, a seamless whole.
6. How did you enter the music scene? What led you to living a creative life?
I don’t think I ever entered it…I’ve always felt on the periphery, but in a good way. Like I’m lucky as heck that the amazing people say yes to working on projects with me. As for living a creative life, you know, I think it was in the air when I was growing up. Julia Cameron was writing about The Artist’s Way, Paramanhansa Yogananda’s book was blowing minds left and right. I am inspired by the creations of others and felt the inner pull.
7. What do you hope listeners will appreciate about this album?
I hope there is some catharsis, some resonance of resilience, some spark of joy, some sense of exploration.
8. What are some of the hidden gems that listeners might not notice initially?
Oooh, I’m more interested in what people say about this….meshe@ socialbc.ca!
